What Does Coolant Do In A Car?

In order to move your car, an internal combustion engine will produce the necessary power. In doing so, a significant amount of heat is ultimately produced. Engine coolant is designed to prevent catastrophic failures like engine damage caused by an excess of heat.

What Does Engine Coolant Do?

Also referred to as antifreeze, coolant is used to prevent engine failures that are related to overheating. Here are a few functions of this essential fluid:

  • Prevents Corrosion: Additives are responsible for protecting components from any corrosion, scale, and rust.
  • Regulates Temperature: Coolant will absorb excess heat, move it away from engine parts, and maintain optimal temperatures.
  • Lubricates: Coolant is needed to lubricate the various moving parts throughout the cooling system.
  • Protects Against Freeze: Coolant can prevent the cooling system from freezing in chilly weather.
  • Prevents Deposits: Deposits and clogging can be stopped from impairing the cooling system.

How Does Coolant Work In The Engine?

As your engine operates, the water pump will circulate coolant through the cylinder head and engine block. This is where it absorbs heat generated from the combustion process.

Heated coolant will flow through the radiator, where it releases heat into the air before returning it to the engine. The thermostat will regulate coolant temperature as this process unfolds.

This cycle will continuously repeat while the engine runs, maintaining your engine’s precise temperature range needed for optimal operation.

Signs Of Low Coolant

Always maintain and change the coolant according to your manufacturer’s recommendations. Once you determine the recommended coolant change interval, it’s time to completely drain the coolant before refilling it.

This will remove all rust, dirt, and degraded coolant that can potentially clog passages and reduce the cooling efficiency.

What Type Of Coolant Does Your Car Need?

The make and model of your car will determine which coolant type is best. The use of an incorrect coolant could damage components, lead to corrosion, or cause engine failure.
