How To Tell If Freon Is Low In AC Car

If you believe your car’s AC performance seems to be weak or failing altogether, the problem may be the result of low Freon levels. Let’s take a look at how you can identify this issue, and how it can be fixed.

How Does Car AC Work?

The extreme heat of the Arizona summers can take a toll on all car AC systems. The last thing you want to do is head off on a long road trip only to realize your AC is not working properly.

The chemical (refrigerant) designed to provide the cabin with cool air is called Freon. Without Freon, there is no way to circulate the cool air throughout your car. AC systems will leverage high-and-low pressure.

Before Freon is ever converted into a liquid on the high side, it begins as a gas on the low-pressure side of the system. Your car is kept cool by the constant refrigerant circulation through both the high and low-pressure sides of the AC system.

Unfortunately, leaks can start to develop within the system as time goes on. Freon and/or pressure levels can start to dop, resulting in decreased performance overall from your AC system. If left unfixed, the system can fail altogether.

Signs Your Car AC Is Low On Freon

Here are three of the most obvious signs your car is low on Freon, indicating the need for the AC to be recharged.

Refrigerant Leaks

This is a serious symptom of low Freon levels. If you see a leak, you will know it is Freon if it appears as a thin, greasy substance.

Typically, these leaks can be found under the hood around the compressor, inside the cabin, or underneath the car. If you see any leakage, it’s best to take your car to the local auto care experts.

AC Is Blowing Hot Air

When your AC system is blowing warm air, this is likely the most obvious indication of low Freon levels.

Your AC system operates by circulating this pressurized refrigerant, which means when the levels drop too much, it will affect the AC’s performance.

Listen For The AC Clutch To Engage

If you listen closely, you may hear a ‘click’ when turning on your car’s AC system. This sound signifies the clutch engaging.

When Freon levels are too low, the clutch will fail to engage. This means there is not enough refrigerant for the compressor to pressurize.

What To Do When Car AC Freon Levels Are Too Low

The auto care professionals will check the AC system’s pressures with gauges, inspecting for any visible leaks. If a leak is found, it will be repaired and topped off with fresh refrigerant.

If you suspect this is the exact issue within your AC system, it’s best to take your car to the experienced team at University Auto Repair.
