A Malfunctioning Fuel Pump Can Make Your Engine Surge

If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine keeps picking up speed by itself, it could be that the fuel pump is pushing too much gasoline or diesel fuel into the engine. This is just one sign that your fuel pump is going bad. University Auto Repair is going to list the other signs below. Generally, you can expect to get about 100,000 miles out of the factory fuel pump. After this mileage duration, the fuel pump will need to be changed sooner rather than later.

Constant Overheating

Another sign that your fuel pump is going bad is if your engine overheats every time that you drive your automobile. This is an indication that the fuel pump motor is overheating because the pump is unable to draw enough fuel out of the tank to cool it.

Hard Starts/No Starts

Difficulty starting your automobile or being unable to start it at all is also an indication that the fuel pump is going out. A dead fuel pump is unable to push gasoline or diesel fuel into the engine. Consequently, you won’t be able to start your vehicle.

Low Fuel Pressure

If you measure your fuel pressure and it is lower than the recommended value in your owner’s manual, your fuel pump is dying. The fuel pump is responsible for the fuel pressure, and as it goes bad, there will be a significant reduction in your fuel pressure.

Poor Fuel Economy

You will also notice a reduction in your vehicle’s fuel economy. This is an indication that the engine is running inefficiently. This inefficiency can be caused by a dying fuel pump that is not sending the correct amount of fuel into the engine at the right time.

Sputtering at High Speeds

Your vehicle will also sputter at high speeds if the fuel pump is dying. This is because the pump is unable to send enough gasoline into the engine to sustain the higher speeds. In other words, your engine needs extra gasoline or diesel fuel to go faster.

Stress Power Loss

Finally, the same is true with engine stress. Anytime your engine is under stress, the fuel pump sends more fuel into it to help it sustain power. If your vehicle loses power when it is under stress, this points to a problem with the fuel pump.
