Being able to recharge your car’s AC will ensure you stay cool while driving during the extreme Arizona summers. This is a straightforward maintenance task designed to keep your car’s cabin cool and comfortable. Use our step-by-step guide below to recharge your AC properly.
How To Recharge Your Car’s AC
The extreme heat of the Arizona summers can take a toll on all car AC systems. The last thing you want to do is head off on a long road trip only to realize your AC is not working properly.
Begin this process by properly locating the car’s AC compressor. The compressor is belt-driven, featuring a large clutch and pulley on the belt side.
You will see two hoses or tubes coming out of the back. Make sure you have gloves, safety glasses, and refrigerant on hand for this process.
Of course, if you are not sure you can handle this as a DIY task, it’s best to contact the professionals at University Auto Repair.
Step 1. Remove The Low Pressure Port Cap
- The larger of the two tubes coming off your compressor is the low-pressure line.
- This line features a low-pressure port with a cap, which is where the AC Pro hose is to be attached.
- The size of the port should be about the width of your thumb.
- Remove the cap and place it somewhere safe for the time being.
Step 2. Turn The AC System On
- Turn your car on at this time in case you didn’t do that as part of step one.
- Start your engine and turn your AC up to “Max-Cool” with your fan on high.
Step 3. Attach Gauge Assembly
- You can twist your plastic safety disc off the can of refrigerant and throw it away.
- Attach the gauge assembly to the can by twisting it on firmly.
- Refrain from removing the can until it is completely empty.
- Always shake the can well before using it.
- Push the quick-connect fitting at the end of the recharge hose down onto your low-pressure port.
- This fitting only fits on the correct port, as you will hear it click into place.
- Tug on the fitting just a bit to ensure it is sealed properly.
Step 4. Read Your Gauge
- You will use the gauge to read the system pressure.
- Read the pressure that is indicated by the gauge needle only while your AC compressor is running.
- You will know it is running when the clutch in the center is clearly spinning.
- It is normal for the compressor to turn on and off.
- The reading on the gauge will likely appear red when the compressor is not running.
- If the compressor does not come on, it could be a sign of low refrigerant levels.
- In this event, it’s wise to add some refrigerant.
- Take your vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop if your compressor still refuses to turn on.
Step 5. Determine Guage Reading
- If the needle is in the “high pressure” section or in red on the gauge, DO NOT add refrigerant.
- This reading calls for professional inspection and service.
- If the needle is in the yellow portion of the gauge, no additional refrigerant is called for.
- Your system does need refrigerant if the needle is in the white or “low pressure” area of the gauge.
Step 6. Add Refrigerant
- Begin by double-checking that the hose is securely attached to your low-pressure port.
- Hold the cap vertically and squeeze the trigger in order to add refrigerant.
- When charging, shake the can up and down.
- Alternate between holding the can vertically and horizontally every couple seconds.
- Release the trigger and check the system pressure every ten seconds.
- Always wait until the compressor is cycling before checking the gauge reading.
- Continue this process until your needle moves into the green area.
Step 7. Disconnect Hose And Store Remaining Refrigerant
- The last step is disconnecting the hose.
- To do this, pull up on the collar around the connector, as this will release it from the port.
- Now replace the cap on the port and turn your car off.
- If there is any refrigerant left in your can, leave the charging assembly attached and store it in a dry, cool location.
