We are proud of our city. Flagstaff, AZ, is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Still, we do have an auto theft problem in our town, but you do not have to become a victim. There are several ways you can avoid car theft and we’d like to list them below. We’d also like to assure you that if your vehicle does get taken, University Auto Repair will inspect it thoroughly once the police recover it and release it back to you.
Existing Equipment and Common-Sense Tips
Your vehicle is already equipped with door locks, so make sure you use them at all times. Even if you’re running into the store or post office quickly and you’ll be in and out in no time, lock your automobile. Never leave your vehicle unlocked when it’s parked on the street or in a parking lot. Locks are the first deterrent to auto thieves because it will take them longer to get into the vehicle – time they cannot afford to lose.
Don’t leave your keys in the car, either. Keep them with you. Roll up your windows and close your sunroof if you have one. Don’t give thieves any way to get into your car. Avoid additionally tempting a passerby by leaving your vehicle running. Turn your motor off. It doesn’t matter how short you’ll be while away from it or whether it will remain in your site. Hide your valuables, too. Many people steal cars for what’s inside as much as for the car. Finally, stay away from high-crime areas in the city if you can.
Anti-Theft Equipment
If you must head to high-crime areas regularly or currently live in one, install an anti-theft system into your vehicle. There are many types from which to choose, some more affordable than others. Consider the following anti-theft devices to determine which one is best for you:
- Steering Wheel Lock: This mechanism fits on the steering wheel to render it useless until removed and is visible to passersby.
- Ignition Cut-Off: This system cuts the ignition to prevent anyone else from starting your car besides you.
- Passive Alarm: This is a newer vehicle alarm system that automatically activates when you remove the key from the ignition.
- Signal System: This is a GPS tracker that sends a signal to the police so they can track the location of your stolen vehicle.
Any one or a combination of these systems will help deter thieves and the latter will help police track your vehicle’s location in the event it is stolen. We hope they never have to use the GPS system, however.
