How To Add Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid helps to make turning and steering easier in every vehicle. Many modern vehicles come equipped with Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) and do not require power steering fluid. However, lots of older vehicles do rely on this fluid to keep the system running smoothly. Drivers should check their power steering fluid level each and every month. Use our simple guide below to add power steering fluid, when necessary.

How To Add Power Steering Fluid In Your Vehicle

Whenever the power steering fluid level is low, you’ll have to add more fluid to keep your power system operating at full capacity. Reference your owner’s manual for full details before tackling this task.

Start by getting a quart of the correct power steering fluid for your car. Always ensure that you are not wearing any loose clothing, at this time. Keep your arms away from the cooling fan(s) when inspecting the fluid, as these fans can turn on automatically, even when the engine is off.

Step 1.

  • Park your car on a level surface, with the parking brake on.

Step 2.

  • Start the engine and let it run until the temperature gauge reaches and stays operating in its normal range.

Step 3.

  • Turn the steering wheel all the way to full lock with your engine idling.
  • Now, turn it the other way to opposite lock.
  • Repeat this process several times.

Step 4.

  • Turn off the engine and open the hood, at this time.

Step 5.

  • Find your power steering reservoir.
  • Typically, it is located on or near the engine.
  • It may have a white or yellow reservoir with a black cap.

Step 6.

  • Wipe the reservoir completely clean with a towel or rag.
  • This helps to prevent dirt from getting on it while you add the power steering fluid.

Step 7.

  • Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir.
  • You will have to either twist and pull out the dipstick, or view “MIN” and “MAX” lines featured outside the reservoir.
  • The method in which you’ll have to do this depends on the type of reservoir.

Step 8.

  • If the reservoir level or dipstick is between “MIN” and “MAX”, you do not need to add fluid.

Step 9.

  • If the fluid is level is below the “MIN” line, you must remove the cap or leave the dipstick and add the fluid.
  • Always add the power steering fluid in small amounts, inspecting the level after each time.
  • DO NOT fill the fluid above the “MAX” line.

Step 10.

  • Replace your cap or dipstick.
  • Ensure it is sealed tight.
