Here are a few reasons why your car will not drive forward but will go in reverse, and what drivers can do about it.
Why Won’t My Car Drive Forward But Will Reverse?
There are three common reasons why your car may be able to go in reverse but refuses to drive forward. In most cases, drivers should blame a failing speed sensor, transmission problems, or a cracked fluid tube. Let’s dive into these issues below.
Transmission Issues
In automatic transmission vehicles, the automatic transmission will usually only go in reverse when a component either becomes damaged or fails. The transmission is the most likely culprit behind a vehicle only moving in reverse. It’s suggested to check the gear shifter whenever the vehicle does not function in one or more gears.
The gear cable should be stretched beyond its normal length, calling for adjustments. Low transmission fluid levels may also be a reason why the vehicle only goes in reverse. Use your transmission dipstick to inspect the fluid level. The transmission will not be able to properly operate when it does not get a sufficient amount of fluid.
Failing Speed Sensor
Even a simple component, such as a speed sensor, can cause issues within the car’s transmission system. This sensor is responsible for providing the ECU information about the car’s speed that ultimately impacts gear shifting.
If this information appears erratic, the transmission could respond by solely working in reverse.
Cracked Fluid Tube
It is possible for a cracked or broken fluid tube to cause this issue, as well. When the forward tube at the pipe joint breaks or cracks, the car cannot move forward.
However, if this is the case, the car will be able to still go in reverse. Thankfully, this repair is as simple as replacing the damaged parts.
